New Roman Missal
Before we get into what some of the changes are. It would be helpful if you watched a video to learn about why the changes are being made: The video was made for teens, but is made in a way that all can understand. It is about 8 minutes long so give yourself enough time, you will be glad that you watched it.So as you saw, Mass is not changing. We will still have the Lirturgy of the Word and Eucharist. What will be changing is some of the text of the Mass. For example the priest currently says, "The Lord be with you," and we respond, "And also with you." However the original Latin is: Et cum spiritu tuo. What we currently say doesn't include the word Spirit. Starting on November 27th we will begin to say, "And with your spirit." This is similiar to what St. Paul said in Galations 6:18. "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brother. Amen."Another example is the Nicene Creed. We will change what we say from, "We believe in one God..." to "I believe in one God..." This will be a way for you to personally state what you are praying.There may be some words that will pop up in the new translation that have you scratching your head. Lets take a look at some of them:Abasement- Lowering of one of higher rank-Jesus, though He was God, lowered himself and became a human being.Consubstantial- The belief, articulated in the Nicene Creed, about the relationship of the Father and Son: That "in the Father and with the Father, the Son is one and the same God" (CCC 262)Ineffable- That which cannot be conceived or expressed fully, such as describing the mystery of the Incarnation- (Jesus becoming the word made flesh.)Oblation- A gift or sacrifice offered to God.The changes should point to us being more intentional about what we are saying. Hopefully being intentional will lead us to deeper understanding of the Mass and a better relationship with God. We may mess up a bunch of times, but that is okay. It will take some time to get all of the word changes down. The important thing is to have an open mind and heart and let the spirit guide you into a better understanding of the Mass.Hopefully this will newsletter will be helpful to you as we begin the transition.
