The Prayer Shawl Ministry was started by Janet Bristow and Victoria Gallo in 1998 as a way to reach out to those in need of comfort. They had seen the comfort a shawl brought to a friend whose husband was ill. Their love of knitting and crochet led them to create shawls for those in need. As each shawl was made, prayers were offered for the person who would receive it. They found that they were being led by the Holy Spirit as some shawls being made for a specific person would find their way to another person in need of comfort and healing. Soon many people wished to establish prayer shawl groups. Their website, www.shawlministry.com was established as a helpful resource.
Our Ss. John and Paul Prayer Shawl Ministry was started in 2009.
Who are we?
Knitters and crocheters who make prayer shawls and lap robes for parishioners.
Who Receives a Shawl?
Anyone in need of comfort, healing, consolation, or hope
When do we meet?
Every Wednesday at 11:30 am at the home of Jennie Allen. We gather for lunch and start knitting around 12:30 pm.
What makes a Prayer Shawl Special?
During the process of making the shawl, the crafter prays for the person who will receive it.
After a shawl is finished, a Miraculous Medal is attached, and the shawls are blessed by Father Mark and all of us on the Prayer Shawl Team. ( see photo album).
Other items we knit, crochet or sew
The SSJP Prayer Shawl Ministry does more than knit and crochet prayer shawls and lap blankets for ill or elderly parishioners.
We also make:
Preemie hats and blankets
Chemo caps
Diapers
Baby blankets
Scarves, hats and mittens for the needy
